Vaarschool Amsterdam is the first and only boating school on the Amsterdam canals. For more than 25 years, we have been helping both beginners and experienced boaters gain confidence on the water through professional, enjoyable boating lessons.
Learning to drive a boat in Amsterdam is a truly unique experience. The historic canals, busy waterways, iconic bridges and the open waters of the IJ provide the perfect setting to develop your boating skills. We offer lessons during the day, in the evenings and at weekends.
Our practical lessons take place aboard WOEST, a beautiful hybrid aluminium sloop and a fine example of Dutch craftsmanship. She glides silently through Amsterdam's UNESCO World Heritage-listed Canal District on electric power, offering a comfortable and sustainable way to learn.
Prefer lessons on your own boat? Of course. Our CWO-certified instructor has extensive experience teaching on both conventional and electric motorboats.
Within Amsterdam's canals we operate entirely on electric power. If you would also like to gain experience with a petrol-powered engine, we leave the canals and switch to the combustion engine. Beyond the Oranje Locks, you'll have the opportunity to practise higher-speed boating safely on the open waters of the IJmeer.
Every lesson is tailored to your experience, personal goals and learning objectives. The route and lesson content can also be adapted to suit your needs. In addition to our standard boating courses, we are happy to create a customised programme just for you.

You can also combine your boating experience with a longer cruise beyond Amsterdam. Take the helm and navigate to picturesque destinations such as Durgerdam or the castle at Muiden. Along the way, you'll learn how to pass through locks, navigate open water and, if you wish, experience high-speed boating on the IJmeer under the guidance of your instructor.

The clinic takes place aboard WOEST, our exclusive hybrid aluminium sloop. A fine example of Dutch craftsmanship, WOEST glides silently through Amsterdam's canals on electric power and, beyond the canals, can switch to its engine for a more dynamic boating experience. It's a truly memorable way to explore the UNESCO World Heritage-listed 17th-century Amsterdam canal district.
Every boating clinic is tailored to your specific goals and preferences. Take the helm yourself and cruise to destinations such as Ouderkerk, Durgerdam or Muiden, or discover Amsterdam's canals from a unique perspective on the water. Along the way, teamwork, communication, enjoyment and a healthy dose of challenge are at the heart of the experience. If you wish, we can round off the day with lunch or dinner at a unique waterfront restaurant.

A boat licence is required for vessels 15 metres or longer or for motorboats capable of speeds exceeding 20 km/h. Small Boat Licence I is valid on most inland waterways, including canals, rivers and smaller lakes. For larger open waters, such as the IJmeer, IJsselmeer, Markermeer, Westerschelde, Oosterschelde and the Wadden Sea, you will need Small Boat Licence II. We offer practical boat training on our boat or your own, both on Amsterdam's canals and on the IJ and IJmeer.
The theory for Small Boat Licence I or II can easily be completed online. If you hold Small Boat Licence II, you can also apply for an International Certificate of Competence (ICC). We are happy to recommend a suitable online theory course and provide practical boat training afterwards, so you can head out on the water with confidence, fully prepared to take the helm.
The Basic Marine Radio Certificate (Basiscertificaat Marifonie) is required to operate a VHF marine radio on Dutch inland waterways. As the theory can easily be completed online, we recommend the online course offered by Vaarschool Albatros.
The theoretical examinations for both the Basic Marine Radio Certificate and GMDSS are administered by the Dutch CBR.
If you require the Marcom-B Certificate, you can take the practical examination at Vaarschool Albatros, which has been officially appointed by the CBR as an examination centre.
